Chansa Ruth Kapaya

UNHCR Representative (March 2016 – present)

Ms. Chansa Ruth Kapaya joined the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in 1988 as an Associate Field Officer in Mangochi and Lilongwe Malawi. Following her four and half year assignment in Malawi, she served in Zimbabwe as Programme Officer and then went on to the UNHCR Regional Office in Pretoria South Africa where she served as Assistant Regional Representative (Programme). In March 2000, she was then posted to the Regional Service Centre in Nairobi Kenya where she served as the Senior Regional Advisor on Refugee Women and Gender until 2004 when she was assigned to UNHCR Headquarters in Geneva Switzerland as Senior Desk Officer for South Sudan. Following this assignment and still at UNHCR’s Headquarters, she was then assigned as the Head of Vacancy Management Unit in the Division of Human Resource Management until May 2010 when she was assigned to Tanzania as Deputy Representative and then Acting Representative in 2012. More recently she held the UNHCR Representative post in Accra Ghana, before being re-assigned back to Tanzania as UNHCR Representative.

Ms. Kapaya is from Zambia and prior to joining UNHCR, Ms. Kapaya worked at the University of Zambia as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, and went on to work as a Programme Support Officer with Save the Children Federation/ USA until May 1988 when she joined UNHCR.

Ms. Kapaya holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Sociology and African Development Studies from the University of Zambia.
