Asalaam Aleikhum na habari za Asubuhi/Mchana!

3.     Congratulations to the Government of Tanzania

We all recognize that the fight against gender based violence and children abuse all over the world is a fight for gender equality.  It is a fight to envision a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity.  A world in which every woman and girl enjoys full gender equality and all legal, social and economic barriers to their empowerment have been removed.

The following examples in policy, legal and institutional framework help to testify this fact.

(i)                       National level Multi-Sectoral Committee:Tanzania established a multi-sectoral committee at the national level to prevent and respond to violence against women and children.  This is a clearest commitment by the Government that it is fighting GBV and CA from the highest national level

(ii)              Community Capacity Enhancement Programme:  This programme is continuously facilitated to increase public awareness on violence against women and children.  Needless to say, this is a vital ingredient katika kuondoa na kutokomeza unyanyasaji wa kijinsia.

(iii)            Penal code that criminalize domestic Violence:  At the legal framework, a penal code is operated, which criminalize domestic violence and all forms of sexual abuse.  Since most of the abuses and violence against women and children occur at family level where victims and their relatives do not report such incidences, this action is important to address this weakness.

(iv)            Adoption of national-wide guidance and Standard Operating Procedures:  Tanzania has put in place this tool. We commend the Government for developing this mechanism since it is an important milestone that provides hands on support to operators country-wide at all times.

(v)              Establishing of Gender and Children Desks:  Gender desks have been established in all major police stations across the country.  This implies that the whole country is well covered, which is critical in ensuring collective and balanced action against GBV and CA.

(vi)            There are many other examples to show that Tanzania is doing remarkably well in this fight against women violence. However, as a development partner to the Government and People of Tanzania, Napongeza serikali ya Tanzania kwa mafanikio haya makubwa

(vii)          I wish to end up my statement by calling upon the Government to widen the efforts by integrating the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in all dimensions of the fight against GBV and CA

The 2030 Agenda asserts gender equality not only as a fundamental  human right, but as a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous          and sustainable world.
