Youth Building Peace Celebrated in Dodoma

Saturday, August 12 - Today was the climax of International Youth Day Celebrations in Dodoma! The celebrations were officiated by the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office responsible for Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled Hon. Jenista Mhagama. This year's theme was Youth Building Peace and the day was dedicated to celebrating young people’s contributions to conflict prevention and transformation as well as inclusion, social justice, and sustainable peace.

The commemorations started with a March for Peace which saw youth march from the National Assembly grounds to Nyerere Square at the city centre where the celebrations were being hosted.

After the march there was entertainment from a group of young dancers.

Addresses were made by several officials including the guest of honor, Minister Mhagama and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Representative a.i. Dr. Hashina Begum who made remarks on behalf of the United Nations Country Team. Making her remarks Ms. Mhagama said, "As we commemorate this day, let us remember our elders, especially Dr. Julius Kambarage Nyerere who did the great job, he used his youth together with other youth (at that time) to bring the great gift of Peace and development in Tanzania. Let us come together today and remember our founder as we look at this years theme, lets see how Tanzanian youth are not supposed to lose this great gift of peace in our country."

On her part, Dr. Begum said, "I am proud to represent the United Nations System in Tanzania for this celebration of International Youth Day 2017. The UN system and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) celebrate International Youth Day by reaffirming and recognizing the central role of young people in promoting the well-being of their families, communities and nation."

The event was broadcast live by the national TV station (TBC) and several blogs. Numerous youth groups and other stakeholders also had booths where they displayed various material related to some of the work their doing with youth. The United Nations in Tanzania also had a One UN booth which had material from several UN agencies including UNFPA, the International Labor Organization (ILO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Youth of United Nations Association (YUNA).
