UN Secretary General meets with Minister of Foreign Affairs

On Wednesday evening, while he was in transit on his way back to New York having completed working visits in Kenya and Somalia, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres met with Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation (MFAEAC), Honourable Doctor Augustine Mahiga as well as UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Mr. Alvaro Rodriguez and several other government officials.

Among the topics they discussed were former President of Tanzania, Banjamin Mkapa's efforts to mediate a peace deal under the EAC. President of the United Republic of Tanzania, John Magufuli, sent a message through Mahiga to the Secretary General that the recent instability in Burundi, as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo, had led to a massive number of civilians seeking refuge in Tanzania and its neighbouting countries. President Magufuli reiterated that the East African Region was committed to ensuring political stability was restored.

Mr, Guterres commended Tanzania for maintaining peace in its society and upholding principles of good governance within both the EAC and SADC. "The United Nations appreciates the work done by President Mkapa  in Burundi  under the EAC and its leadership. If the region comes together the way EAC has done in the case of Burundi, I am sure together they will be able to establish lasting solutions,ā€ he remarked. (Source: Daily News)
